Pink Flag

Sometimes, the deepest heartbreak is not caused by what we never knew, but by what we chose not to see.

Pink Flag is a large contemporary abstract painting exploring unexpected separation, self-deception, resilience and healing. It reflects the moment when a relationship ends without warning, leaving us to understand the signs we overlooked and to slowly learn to let go.

The painting begins with layers of deep red, symbolising the warning signs—the red flags—we instinctively sensed but chose not to acknowledge. There is no such thing as a pink flag; it exists only in the stories we tell ourselves when hope quietly repaints reality. Wanting to love and to be loved, we transform warning signs into promises, convincing ourselves that tomorrow will be different.

The painting is stitched with hand-dyed paper thread, coloured with natural pigments before being sewn into the canvas. The slow and meticulous dyeing process became an integral part of the work itself. Watching the thread gradually absorb colour mirrored the passing of time—a metaphor for the years spent holding onto an illusion. Once stitched into the painting, each puncture of the needle quietly echoed the pain of a heart that had itself been pierced. The thread no longer simply binds the surface together; it carries memory, endurance, and the quiet acceptance that healing begins only when we finally let go.

Created with acrylic, natural pigments and hand-dyed paper thread, Pink Flag celebrates the resilience of the human heart. It reminds us that letting go is not the opposite of love. Sometimes, it is the most loving thing we can do—for ourselves.
