Original abstract painting made with Australian healing clay and natural pigments from Gumbaynggirr Country (Australia), France and Spain.
Shortly after arriving in Australia, I travelled to Moree, in New South Wales. There, I met Aboriginal women whose families had been confined to government settlements known as missions. Encountering the world's oldest continuous culture within imposed square boundaries profoundly changed my understanding of Australia's history.
Years later, this painting emerged from that memory. Vast layers of colour evoke the immensity of the Australian landscape, gradually softening a history marked by dispossession. The traces of the square forms remain visible beneath the surface, while Australian healing clay suggests resilience, care and the possibility of renewal.
This work also honours my first oral lessons from Aboriginal women, who invited me to sit beside them and grind local ochres by hand. That moment marked the beginning of a relationship with natural pigments based on listening, respect and permission.
